Staying Grounded in Uncertain Times

I am pretty sure I’m not the only one who finds it overwhelming to navigate the uncertainty in the world today. Whether it’s natural disasters, political polarization, global tensions, or issues closer to home like the health and well-being of loved ones, there is much happening in the world that contributes to a sense of uncertainty.

The term VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) describes the rapid, ever-changing state of our world. We receive information more quickly than ever, which allows us to stay connected at all hours. However, the conveniences and luxuries we've created can encroach on our time for rest and play if we allow them.

Humans have survived for millennia without the technology that now feels second nature. Our ability to adapt to changing times and technologies is both a strength and a source of stress. As we navigate the rapid pace of change in our ever-connected world, our stress tolerance is often tested. So, how do we stay true to ourselves and remain grounded in this era of uncertainty? How can we maintain calm amidst chaos and solve complex challenges where there is no playbook? While we all have coping mechanisms and knee-jerk reactions, these strategies only work for so long. Attempts to numb overwhelming feelings often lead to them resurfacing more intensely. Staying grounded in uncertain times requires intentional practices that help us navigate the chaos without losing our sense of self. Here are a few strategies to foster calm and resilience amidst the VUCA landscape:

Slow Down & Breathe

So often, when we are stressed or navigating the unknown, we realize that we are trying to outrun our busy lives and are holding our breath as we go. Life is so much easier when we are breathing! While a daily meditation, mindfulness, or prayer practice is ideal, there is something truly powerful in choosing to practice a ‘pause and breathe’ moment throughout the day. Like with anything else, the more we practice it, the easier it becomes. Taking a few minutes each day to focus on the breath can create a sense of peace.

Limit Information Intake

In a world of constant connectivity, it’s essential to set boundaries on news and social media consumption. Choosing specific times to check updates can help avoid overwhelming ourselves with a constant influx of information, particularly when we wake up and go to sleep. Having a discipline around connecting with our breath and body before engaging with our devices can make a big difference in our ability to manage stress throughout the day.

Connect with Nature & Community

While we often operate as if we are machines in this ever-on modern world, we are actually part of nature! It is our human nature to be connected to the natural world and to one another. When we disconnect from technology and choose to spend time outside and engage with our community, it can significantly improve our mental well-being and reduce cortisol levels. Nature has a grounding effect that can help clear our minds and reduce stress.

By implementing these strategies, we can begin to create a sense of inner strength and stability in our lives, focusing on what’s within our sphere of influence and allowing us to remain grounded even when much exists beyond our control.
